I recently had a pregnant patient ask me what she should bring on an upcoming trip—and it’s one of my favorite questions to answer. As both a chiropractor and a mom who loves to travel, I’ve experienced firsthand how uncomfortable long car rides, flights, or even days on your feet can be during pregnancy.
Whether you’re planning a babymoon, visiting family, or sneaking in one last trip before baby arrives, being prepared can make all the difference in how you feel. Here are the three must-have items I always recommend to my pregnant patients when they travel:
Magnesium
This one is your travel MVP! Magnesium can be a game-changer for pregnant mamas on the move.
It helps with:
- Bowel regularity (especially important when routines are off)
- Reducing leg cramps and swelling
- Calming the nervous system for better sleep
I love LMNT electrolyte packets—they pack a perfect combo of magnesium, potassium, and sodium to support your hydration and keep your muscles happy. We happen to also be partnered with LMNT and sell individual packets in our office to try! Another favorite is Natural Calm, a magnesium supplement you can stir into water before bed for a relaxing nighttime ritual.
A Lacrosse Ball
This one goes in your carry-on! A lacrosse ball is one of the best travel tools for soft tissue release, especially for your:
- Glutes and pelvic floor (sitting for long periods can cause tightness here)
- Low back and upper back (roll it gently against a wall at your hotel or seatback while traveling)
You don’t need a ton of space or time—just a few minutes of mindful pressure can make your muscles feel brand new. It’s a low-effort, high-impact way to stay loose and mobile.
Compression Socks or Tights
Flying? Standing for long periods? Compression gear is your best friend. It helps reduce swelling in the feet and lower legs, promote healthy circulation and prevent varicose veins from getting worse.
I always recommend bringing an extra pair in your bag, especially for long flights or warm climates. You’ll feel the difference at the end of the day.
Pregnancy doesn’t mean you have to stop traveling—it just means you need to travel smarter. With the right tools, you can stay comfortable, mobile, and energized so you can enjoy your trip AND support your body through all the changes it’s going through.
